Connecting Fundin to ChatGPT (MCP)

Use Fundin's data directly inside ChatGPT to find grants, manage your campaigns and draft applications.

You can connect Fundin to ChatGPT using MCP.

Once connected, ChatGPT can search the grant database, check your matched grants, look at your campaigns and applications, and read your organisation profile, all from a normal chat.

This means you can ask ChatGPT things like "find me grants for a youth project in Leeds" or "draft an application for XYZ Fund" and it will pull live, accurate data from your Fundin account rather than guessing.

💡 What is MCP? MCP (Model Context Protocol) is what lets ChatGPT securely connect to other apps and pull in real data. Think of it as giving ChatGPT a key to your Fundin account so it can actually look things up, rather than just chatting.

⚠️ Before you start: Connecting a custom MCP server in ChatGPT currently requires a Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise or Edu plan, and needs "Developer mode" turned on first — this is a beta feature from OpenAI, so the exact wording and screens may shift over time. It isn't available on the ChatGPT Free plan.

Setting it up

  1. In ChatGPT, click your name/workspace in the bottom-left, then choose Settings

  2. Go to the Plugins tab (OpenAI may label this "Apps & Connectors" depending on your account) and find Advanced settings

  3. Turn on Developer mode — you'll see a warning about the risks of custom MCP servers; this is standard OpenAI messaging and applies to any custom connector, not just Fundin

  1. Click Create app (or the + next to the search bar)

  2. Copy these into the fields:

  1. Tick I understand and want to continue, then click Create

  2. Sign in and approve access — that's it, you're connected

💡 Tip: Start a new chat, turn on Developer mode for that chat and select Fundin as a source, then ask "what grants do you have matched for me?" to confirm the connection is working before you build anything more complex.

Using Fundin in a chat

ChatGPT currently asks you to enable Developer mode and pick your source(s) at the start of each chat, rather than staying on permanently in the background. Look for the tools/sources option in the message box, turn on Developer mode if prompted, and select Fundin before you ask your question.

ChatGPT will show a confirmation prompt before running actions that create or change something (like updating a campaign or an application answer). Read-only actions, like searching grants or checking your readiness score, are lower risk, but ChatGPT may still confirm these depending on your settings.

What ChatGPT can see

Once connected, ChatGPT has access to your own Fundin account only, including:

  • The grant database and your matched grants

  • Your campaigns, applications and application answers

  • Your organisation profile and readiness score

  • Your outcome goals, estimated expenses and bid library documents

⚠️ ChatGPT can only see data tied to your own organisation. It cannot see other organisations' data, and it cannot submit applications or make payments on your behalf.

What if something isn't working?

If ChatGPT says it can't see your Fundin data, first check that Developer mode is on and Fundin is selected as a source for that chat — this resets between chats. If the connection itself looks broken, go back to Settings → Plugins → Fundin and check it still shows as Connected; disconnect and reconnect if not.
